Behavioural Escalation
Definition
Behavioural Escalation describes the movement from an early internal signal toward avoidance, disengagement or coping behaviour.
Purpose
The purpose is to document the early stage before visible failure, crisis or sustained withdrawal.
Behavioural Logic
Escalation becomes harder to interrupt once relief-seeking behaviour has already become the default response.

Implementation
Participants document the earliest detectable signal, the predicted cost of engagement and the behaviour selected for relief.
Participant Example
A.M. documented mathematics-related shame and withdrawal, while N.A. documented predicted study discomfort before task initiation.
Research Status
Behavioural Escalation is a working BTB v1.0 construct under pilot documentation.
Future Measurement Questions
- Which signals precede avoidance most consistently?
- Can escalation be detected before task abandonment?
- Can participant tracking identify escalation thresholds?
